Toscano Antico cigars are made of Kentucky-style dark fire cured tobacco from both Tuscany and Tennessee. This blend of tobacco makes for a strong flavor profile with a Mesquite and slightly peppery taste. Antico is one of the original and most famous of the Toscano cigar line! Unlike Caribbean cigars, where a binder is rolled around the filler tobacco before the wrapper tobacco covers it over, the Toscano cigar is made by rolling the filler tobacco with only the wrapper tobacco (without any binder).
Toscano Antico is the ultimate cigar for tough people. This rustic cigar is the co-star of Clint Eastwood in his famed Spaghetti Western movies directed by Sergio Leone. A mix of the best Italian and American Kentucky tobaccos, aged 12 months, gives it bold and spicy flavors of pepper, hickory, and oak wood.
In 1818, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand III, founded a tobacco factory that manufactured Toscano cigars. A bale of Kentucky tobacco leaves that had been drying in the open were caught in an unexpected downpour of rain. The wet tobacco started to ferment in the summer heat. It was decided that, instead of being thrown away, the fermented tobacco should be used to produce cigars to be sold in Florence. It gained popularity amongst Italians and thereafter became a regular production. Today, Toscano brand cigars are manufactured by Manifatture Sigaro Toscano SpA located in Lucca and Cava de' Tirreni.
Toscano cigar is often regarded as the symbol of Italian Unification. Giuseppe Garibaldi, who was the central figure of the Italian Revolution, is an insuperable testimonial to Toscano cigar. He was a regular Toscano cigar smoker, especially during the Expedition of the Thousand.
